Painting is a love of life for Montreal born Gail Descoeurs who was first influenced to be an artist by her father, Jean-Guy Descoeurs. During her childhood years she would spend hours sketching alongside him and was always found in the forests and fields for it was there she felt connected and at peace. In 1980 she took out her father’s easel and oil paints and started to paint. From that moment on her passion for art began.
Gail is predominately self-taught and throughout her early career as an artist she supported herself by pursuing a career in mechanical drafting. In the 90’s, she started selling and exhibiting her work with associations and in juried shows and her work became recognized and sought after.
Gail derives inspiration from the power of nature and she is moved by the different feelings that nature evokes. She paints in her studio using pieces of her own photographed scenes combined with her dreams, memories and imagination that’s guided by her heart and mood to exhibit colorful dramatic scenes. Her paintings combined with the precision of realism and imaginative simplified views instill a frozen element in her work that is not just standing still but timeless.
In 2002, after many requests, she decided to take up teaching and as passionate as Gail is about expressing herself on canvas she discovered that she is equally passionate for sharing her love of painting with her students. She aims her classes not only at people who want to paint, but believes anyone can benefit from her techniques by learning a different way of observing and looking at the world.
Gail is an award winning artist and has won second prize with the International Artist Magazine landscape competition in 2009. In 2010 she won “Best of Show” in the Avenue Art Gallery Brush-Off Competition in Montreal.
Gail runs regular art classes/workshops and paints full time – an occupation that is her lifelong dream come true. And yes Gail does love to run as well, a marathon runner, and has been running as long as she has been painting. She resides in the countryside to stay close to nature where she still feels at peace and inspired every day. The painter and the painting…All is one.
